摘要

The mycotoxin Ochratoxin A (OTA) is produced by one Penicillium and several Aspergillus species. The high prevalence of OTA exposure among humans worldwide has become a reason of concern because this substance causes adverse effects both in animals and in cell culture. The kidney is the main target organ affected by OTA in mammals. In humans, epidemiologicrndata indicate a correlation between OTA exposure and chronic nephrotoxicity. Fur-thermore, high exposure to OTA appears to be associated with the occurrence of tumours of the urinary tract (bladder and urothelia). Other adverse effects include genotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity. Even at very low concentrations OTA causes per-turbations of cellular signalling pathways as well as enhanced apoptosis.
