One thing you can be sure of when you talk to Paul Wilkinson is that he tells it like it is. There is no room for ambiguity or subterfuge with the chairman of Improve - the company that was last month finally granted a licence to become the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the food and drink industry. When it comes to the escalating skills shortage in the industry that Improve will have to address, Wilkinson does not fudge his words. The name Improve is indicative of Wilkinson's no-nonsense approach. Forget long-winded titles involving words such as training or skills. The name sends a clear message to the industry. On the one hand it emphasises an aim to bring better training to the industry, on the other it recognises there is much to be done. For Wilkinson, Improve is not just a company name - it's a promise. Improve's inception marks a new dawn for food and drink. The idea behind the SSC was first announced by the Department for Education and Skills back in September 2001, when it said it was going to combine the industry's five National Training Organisations (NTOs) - dealing with fish, dairy, bakery, meat, and food and drink - to form one umbrella SSC. The move was a radical change by the government to standardise training and encourage more joined-up thinking across industry.
