Next time you check a football score or send a tweet on your BlackBerry or iPhone, pull up a stock quote for Qualcomm (QCOM, 46). The San Diego company's software and chip designs are the electronic guts that make mobile handsets work.rnQualcomm gets its revenue ($2.75 billion in the June quarter) two ways. It collects royalties on the technology that squeezes lots of phone calls into a small amount of broadcast spectrum, and it sellsrnsemiconductor chips (made under contract by chip fabricators) that embody that technology. This revenue stream is holding up well in the recession, with a mere 0.3% decline from the 2008 quarter, leading to a 1.5% decline in earnings.
