There has been a lot of debate in the U.S. presidential campaign about the impact of outsourcing on joblessness. Much of it is nonsense. While it's true that companies now have the ability to take advantage of the wage differential in such locations as Canada, Eastern Europe, India, Jamaica, the Philippines ― and even Nebraska ― only a small piece of outsourcing involves going offshore. Those who brand outsourcing as bad are misinformed. Outsourcing creates tremendous value and gives companies the ability to be more productive and create significant business impact. It is part of a natural phenomenon, grounded in Adam Smith's concept of improving productivity and increasing the wealth of nations through division of labor; shifting to core competence theories and unbundling as the focus of organizational resources; and, finally, moving to the current view of unbundling and then febundling to achieve success.
