Traffic noise may be the price we pay for the convenience of road transport, but for the people who live close to a heavily trafficked roadway, the price is often unreasonably high. As a result, the construction of barriers to reduce the noise to bearable levels is now automatically incorporated into many new road projects or retrofitted in existing locations where traffic noise has become intolerable. The main problem for the designer is to create a barrier, which reduces the noise to reasonable levels, does not make too great an impact on the environment, is aesthetically acceptable, and is economical to install and maintain.
