A sales team has been working arduously to close a landmark sale. But the CEO becomes impatient, so he steps in and takes over the negotiation. Sure enough, he saves the day, closing the deal in no time. What could possibly be wrong with that picture? For starters, the CEO's "just let me do it" leadership style utterly demoralized the sales team, which had worked hard to earn a "win," only to see it hijacked by by the CEO. According to research just published in the Harvard Business Review, this style - called "pacesetting" - is a recipe for a mediocre organization. Yes, it yields short-term results. But long term it undermines a company's efforts to create a strong, energizing work climate.
