Catheters and other interventional medical devices are presentlynguided by X-ray imaging, despite the advantages of ultrasound imagingnover X-ray imaging in cost, safety, and availability. X-ray imaging isnused because ultrasound reflects specularly from catheters and similarndevices; their visibility is highly angle-dependent. With annomni-directional receiver mounted on a device, the receiver's locationnin the ultrasound image can be deduced from knowing which acoustic raynstruck the receiver and the time from transmission of the imaging pulsento its reception by the receiver. This information is independent ofnspecular reflection. The location of the device can then be indicated innthe ultrasound image by an arrow pointing to the sensor, making possiblenultrasound guidance of these devices. This paper describes the technicalnand practical considerations in the design and construction of thendevice-mounted receiver and associated electronics, and describes somenclinical uses
