摘要

If you want to understand contemporary social movements, do not start with the technologies and media used. Challenging narrow interpretations of social movement-media relationships, this is the provocative thesis passionately put forward by Sasha Costanza-Chock in Out of the shadows, into the streets! The author provides a reflective, situated, historically and contex-tually aware account of rights movements in the United States. The 'non-digital-media-centric' (Pink et al., 2016) focus is particularly on the diverse actions and experiences of documented and undocumented low-wage immigrant workers in Los Angeles, particularly from Latin America and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. In claiming their rights, members of these communities have to assert themselves against the grain: they operate largely from the margins of society, are commonly unintended users of social media and smartphones and dominantly remain invisible on the international human rights agenda.
