The Open Technology Fund (OTF) got some major attention this summer when the president appointed a new, conservative director, Michael Pack, to lead its overseeing body, the U.S. Agency for Global Media (US-AGM). Pack promptly removed and replaced OTF's board of directors and fired its president, Laura Cunningham, and CEO, Libby Liu. OTF is an independent nonprofit that "supports projects focused on counteracting repressive censorship and surveillance. ... [T]he OTF community is working to shape the Internet as a platform that fosters unimpeded connection and collaboration. ..." According to The Verge, "Pack hasn't given a precise justification for the firings, but many of the outgoing leaders claim it is part of a broader move to abandon many of the fund's existing projects."
