New York City intends to build a 14 MW hydro plant at a reservoir in Delaware County, as part of its efforts to promote the development of renewable energy and reduce its carbon footprint, the city's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced in September. Construction of the plant will require about US$ 72 million. New York City DEP has already secured a licence to build the project from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and plans to start construction as early as 2016. The plant will be equipped with four turbines, and is expected to produce 42.3 GWh/year from the water that the reservoir releases into the West Branch of the Delaware river. This is enough to supply 6000 households and will offset 25 620 tonne of CO_2 emissions. Depending on demand and power prices, the plant is expected to generate nearly US$ 2 million in revenues annually, New York City DEP estimates.
