This is the second part of a series of mini-essays by Dr J. C. Jones that will be published in forthcoming issues. These have been peer reviewed to a degree appropriate to 'notes' rather than full articles. It is hoped that they will engender discussion, and readers with responses to any particular mini-essay are encouraged to contact Dr Jonas himself or the journal editor. It is also believed that they will provide teaching material, in which case acknowledgement is requested. There is much research at present into alcohol fuels for spark-ignition engines, and in the US in particular cars are being manufactured which will run on ethanol, neat or blended with gasoline. The benefits are twofold. First, crude oil is saved; this is particularly important during times of high prices for crude oil. Second, the carbon in ethanol was previously in carbohydrate structures and so ethanol is 'carbon neutral' in greenhouse terms.
