Of the last UK onshore licence awards in July 2000, almost half the 123 blocks were for the exploration of coal bed methane and mine gas. Energy minister Helen Lidell said in a written reply to a parliamentary question: "Over 60 blocks are for mined gas and coalbed methane, offering the potential for new jobs in former mining communities. This gas will now contribute to the UK's energy supply rather than being wasted."rnAlkane Energy is the UK's leading commercial supplier of mines gas or coal mine methane (CMM) from abandoned coal mines, of which there are roughly 900 mines in the UK. The group operates three sites in the East Midlands and sells CMM at competitive prices for electricity generation and as fuel for industrial processes.
