Japanese defence minister Gen Nakatani officially launched the Ministry of Defense's (MoD's) Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) on 1 October, stating that the new body is aimed at lowering the costs of procurement and boosting Japan's involvement in international development programmes. The launch of ATLA also saw the appointment of Hideaki Watanabe as its inaugural commissioner. Watanabe was formerly the director general of the MoD's Technical Research and Development Institute (TRDI), which has been incorporated into ATLA.
