It is now almost a quarter of a century since the prime contract for the ANZAC Ship Project (named after the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps of the First World War) was inked by the Commonwealth of Australia and the AMECON consortium. This collaborative programme between the Australian and New Zealand governments resulted in the design, development, and construction of 10 ANZAC-class guided missile frigates - variants of the Blohm+Voss MEKO 200 design - for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), which received eight ships between 1996 and 2006, and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN), which commissioned its two ships in 1997 and 1999.
