Although the war in Afghanistan has lasted 10 years, the overall mission has not changed: the objectives are still preventing the spread of international terrorism, denying the terrorists safe haven in Afghanistan and developing a secure Afghan state.However, Brigadier Nicholas Welch, the British deputy commander of Regional Command South-West (RC(SW)), told Jane's that, within the parameters of RC(SW), the conditions on the ground have changed. Although the Afghan national and local governments are slowly becoming more established, there is now a hardened insurgency, polarised internally, that needs to be addressed and defeated, along with the debilitating effects of corruption.
