At the forefront of Australia's naval modernisation programme, state-owned ASC - the nation's last remaining Australian-owned prime defence contractor - is facing unprecedented challenges from a number of directions. The Adelaide-based company is building air warfare destroyers (AWDs) for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), maintaining the RAN's Collins-class submarines and is expected to play a significant role - if not the lead role - in the RAN's Future Submarine programme.rnIn addition, ASC underwent a restructure in 2009, following the government's decision to postpone its privatisation, and has come under pressure after criticism over its handling of the Collins-class maintenance programme, in which Defence Minister John Faulkner said the availability of the submarines had become "less than optimal".
