Appointed as Australia's Chief of Navy in July 2008, Vice Admiral Russ Crane faces the dual challenge of implementing the wide-reaching aspirations of a new defence White Paper while driving through a New Generation Navy (NGN) programme focused on cultural and structural reform. rnUnder the plans announced in the White Paper in May, the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) submarine fleet will double in size from six to 12 boats, eight so-called future frigates will replace the current Anzac-class ships and a new class of 20 multirole offshore combatant vessels will take up patrol, hydrographic and mine counter- measures duties. Six heavy landing craft and a new replenishment and logistic support ship will also be purchased and a fleet of at least 24 new naval combat helicopters will join six MRH 90 utility helicopters already on order.
