The US and its allies, says US Central Command's (CENTCOM's) Deputy Director for Strategic Plans and Policy, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, are now firmly engaged in what the Bush administration terms the 'Long War' - a global conflict to eradicate terrorism that might last decades. The CENTCOM area of responsibility (AOR) covers Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and 24 other countries, ranging from Egypt in the west to Pakistan in the east, from Kazakhstan in the north to Kenya and the Horn of Africa in the south. Stressing the importance of establishing regional stability, particularly through CENTCOM's operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gen Kimmitt nevertheless sees the burgeoning threat from Al-Qaeda and its associated movements as the command's number one priority.
