Chief of the South African Army Lieu-tenant General Solly Shoke is committed to reshaping the service to best match its expanded regional secu-rity role. This, says Gen Shoke, is an integral element of the process of transforming the armed forces. "When I talk of transformation, I am not talking only of colour. Transformation is a total mind-shift; it is about the way we do things. The first 10 years [after South Africa's 1994 transition to full democracy] were about integrating the army and achieving representivity in terms of demographics. That has not been completed entirely, but we are just about there."
