In April 2005, after two decades of attempts, annorganization to promote health services researchn(HSR) in the UK was founded. It joins both the longestablishednAcademyHealth in the USA and the morenrecent Australia & New Zealand HSR Association and thenCanadian HSR Association in a growing family ofnorganizations committed to enhancing both the qualitynand quantity of HSR and, more importantly, the impactnsuch research has on health-care policy and services.nWhile the national organizations share commonnaims, they differ in their constitution and governance.nThe arrival of a British organization brings anothernunique arrangement as it is nested in the membernorganization of National Health Service (NHS) purchasersnand providers, the NHS Confederation. Whilenthe HSR Network retains the freedom to expressnindependent views, the hope is that such a closenalignment with managers and policy-makers will helpnto achieve the Network’s principal aim – to influencenpolicy and practice, and encourage managers to makenuse of HSR. In return, we hope managers will engagenin shaping future research.
