Shaping sustainable school transport: attitudes, actions and policy

摘要

How can we create a positive setting for school travel awareness? Several recent project pndings on home-school transport have stressed the importance of working on attitudes and actions. Together with an interesting policy, this combination seems to provide a breeding ground for consolidation of the experiments on how to involve the youth of today in tomorrow's sustainable transport. Over the years, many European countries have witnessed an increase in the number of young people being driven to school by car. Even if they would like to walk, cycle or use public transport to get to school, often their parents forbid them due to traffic or social safety reasons. To overcome these barriers, many countries have implemented measures to support safe and sustainable transport routes to school. Some have proved successful in increasing the number of sustainable trips to school. Several of these actions were regional or national, while others were developed as part of EL) projects such as MOST, TAPESTRY, EMOTIONS or PROVIDER and have continued to be implemented by those involved. It has become clear that one must simultaneously focus on several different dimensions in order to shape sustainable school transport: attitudes, actions and policy.
