For some librarians, Amazon's new Search Inside the Book, which opens up the content of over 100,000 books to full-text searching, is more a "bug" than a feature. If you think of Amazon as a free version of Books in Print―with some additional functionality―then this new tool probably is a bug. Julie James, a reference librarian at Forsyth County Public Library, NC, echoes the sentiments of many librarians: "I wish Amazons new 'feature' had been limited to an Advanced Search. Now a basic search brings up way too much junk, even on known titles searched exactly." Librarians report switching to BarnesandNoble.com, but it's unlikely the folks at Amazon care. When I suggested to an Amazon representative that they create a special librarian page, he directed me to the feedback form on Amazons site.
