In the August 2005 issue of LPM a question came up as to the legality of polished props. We were incorrect to say it was OK. It may get through annuals with no problem, but it won't get through an overhaul at a prop shop without paint—with perhaps a few very rare exceptions called out by the prop manufacturer. A polished prop has had no chemical alterations such as chrome would cause, so what is the problem? Actually, there are several, but it mostly is an issue of procedure—or more specifically, lack of one.
