Shell Oil announced on Tuesday, Dec 3, 2013 that it had developed an unleaded 100-octane piston engine fuel to replace 100LL and, presumably, the fuel will enter the FAA's recently established fuel testing and certification process. Shell said the fuel is a culmination of 10 years in R&D and initial testing has been done with two OEMs, Lycoming and Piper. There is additional information on avweb.com. We wouldn't look for such fuel soon at an FBO, but it's progress if you feel leaded fuels (less than .3 percent of all gasoline in the U.S.) is worth the investments compared to getting the cost of fuel to a reasonable level; particularly considering the U.S. is full of far worse contaminants that go untouched due to political influence, in our view.
