Advanced Processing of Woollen Textile Pretreated with UV Excimer Radiation

Wool fabric has been pre treated with 172 nm excimer lamp in air, O2 and N2 atmosphere for different duration of time. Untreated and UV treated fabric samples have been characterized by SEM analysis. Irradiated samples showed a significantly enhanced rate of dye uptake for Acid as well as Reactive dyes. Dye uptake at the end of dyeing cycle was also higher after irradiation. 15 minute UV irradiated sample in N2 atmosphere uptake more anionic dyes. This has been attributed to the creation of additional cationic groups on the fibre surface. Results demonstrate that there is a potential to use UV radiation as a pretreatment for dyeing of wool to shorten the dye cycles or to reduce the temperature of dyeing.
