Tank commanders - that special breed of armoured fighting vehicle (AFV) commander who always got off the first shot, always hit the target and seemed to have a sixth sense for the battlefield - learned to fight with their heads and shoulders exposed outside the turret. They had to do this to survive and win (tank commanders needed to see in order to gain situation awareness [SA]). AFVs are deadly, noisy and require the full focus of the vehicle commander. Pilots of high-performance aircraft experience the same challenge. Protecting the pilot has always been a priority in the design of military aircraft, but the top priority for the most successful aircraft designs has been to create better pilot SA. Canopies are usually made of the best bullet-resistant transparent materials, but the pilot, like his tank commander counterpart, operates exposed to enemy fire.
