摘要

A look at how the Gulf States' national programmes are based on foreign technologies as far as suppliers are concerned, while at least two countries - Saudi Arabia and the UAE- want to reverse this trend as they invest heavily in their indigenous shipbuilding industries. The Gulf states are known for buying 'off-the-shelf multi-billion dollar products for their forces. However, decision-makers understand that indigenous industrial potential is crucial. Without a doubt, this trend will be continued in the future. For now, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a leader in terms of indigenous industrial base; the brightest example is Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB). The company, established in 1996, is involved in several significant shipbuilding programmes and offers landing crafts of 64m, assault boats of 9.5m and fast patrol boats up to 70 metres.
