A shipment of nuclear waste from South Carolina to West Texas was completed last week, the first application of the U.S. Department of Energy's redefinition of high-level waste (HLW). The shipment was sent from the Savannah River Site (SRS) to the Waste Control Specialists facility in Andrews, and completed on Sept. 22. It contained 8 gallons of recycle wastewater from the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) at the SRS. Established in June 2019, the DOE's definition of high level waste was amended to consider the actual level of radioactivity in the waste as opposed to only considering it origin when determining if the materials would be managed as high level.
