ON QIAN ZHONGSHU'S 'THEORY OF SUBLIMITY'

摘要

The "Theory of Sublimity', as the epitome of Qian Zhongshu's translation theory, has enjoyed high prestige in Chinese translation circles and exerted a tremendous impact upon translation studies ever since its publication in 1964. However, as the theory is frequently quoted but seldom clarified, the present paper aims at a systematic and thorough study of it by adopting the popular method of 'interpreting Qian's works in his own words', focusing on the three key concepts formulated in his seminal essay 'Lin Shu's Translations'. This paper then summarizes the four stages of literary translation: performing the function of 'enticement', avoiding 'misrepresentation', pursuing 'sublimity', and attaining the ultimate goal of 'crossing-over'. It concludes that the originality of the 'Theory of Sublimity' lies in the fact that not only does it challenge the traditional Chinese paradigm of 'seeking faithfulness'; it also establishes the ideal goal of literary translation as well as specific means to that end.
