Late November 2008 saw the gathering of an eclectic mix of geographers, archaeologists, historians, botanists, geomorphologists and yes, even photogrammetrists, in snowy Berne, Switzerland. The event was a mini "International Congress" on "Historic maps and imagery for modern scientific applications", held over the weekend of 28th to 30th November 2008. Friday night was marked by a keynote presentation by Jorg Albertz describing the "Meydenbauer archive". Albrecht Meydenbauer was a 19th-century visionary who saw the benefit of acquiring high-quality photographs of landmark buildings, mainly in Germany but also across many sites of antiquity in Greece, Lebanon and Turkey. Some of our German colleagues believe that Meydenbauer invented photogrammetry; however, although he perhaps invented the term, he was certainly influenced by the work of Aime Laussedat (Fryer, 1996; Albertz, 2001).
