I chose the He 51 because to me it was a lovely looking aircraft. Models of Tiger Moths, Gloster Gladiators and PT.17s and World War I types had been done in differing sizes. The He 51 had its beginnings in 1933. Springing from the He 49, Ernst Heinkel's He 51 was a sturdy and orthodox biplane of undistinguished performance. On 7th August 1936, three weeks after the shots had been fired in the Spanish Civil War from fighters sent to aid the Nationalists and reaching Cadiz, it signalled that German combat aircraft were once again firing guns in anger after eighteen years, and of course the resurgence of German air power, so the Luftwaffe was well and truly in existence. He 51s were absorbed by the third squadron of Jagdgruppe 88 under the command of Adolf Galland and relegated to ground attack role, developing tactics which were to prove invaluable to the Luftwaffe in WWII. The He 51 served until 1942/43 on fighter training duties.
