摘要

The 2010 publication of Ruffner's Allusions -Cultural, Literary, Biblical, and Historical represents the third edition of this dictionary since its first publication in 1982 under the original title of Allusions-Cultural, Literacy, Biblical, and Historical: A Thematic Dictionary. The editors of the thematic dictionary had the goal of documenting the metaphorical nature of everyday English words and their cultural meaning. They organized the entries into thematic descriptive categories, and these categories supply information on the origin, nationality and genre of the allusion (p. xv). The original first edition contained 7,000 entries, the second edition (published in 1986) contained 8,700 entries and now this current edition contains 13,000 entries. The editors updated this edition by broadening the scope to include non-Biblical religions such as Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and other faith traditions. Moreover, the editors focused on key areas such as technology and media, the importance of computers and the internet, politics and world history in order to capture allusions "that are truly global in scope" (p. viii).
