Like the other titles in this series this chronology presents a timeline rather than a narrated version of the subject's life. In her introduction Valerie Purton explains that she recognizes that Iris Murdoch "has become an emblem for sufferers from Alzheimer's Disease [and] this did not seem the appropriate place, however, in which to chart in detail the stages of that disease" (p. xv), and that she has "used only resources already in the public domain" (p. xvii). These are both important considerations for a chronology that follows relatively quickly after a major popular movie about the subject and at a time before many personal documents relating to the author are available. The chronology format allows for an overview of Murdoch's development as a writer within the historical, literary and intellectual context of her life. Indeed, in reviewing this title I was struck by the cycle of changes - such as the building and demolition of the Berlin Wall - that occurred in world history from 1919 to 1999, Murdoch's life. Her move from Communist Party supporter during her young adulthood to an admirer of the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the 1980s illustrates just some of the tremendous changes that took place throughout the twentieth century.
