Shortly following publication it was brought to the attention of the editors that some sections of the text in this article were copied without proper attribution from the work of Neil Brenner, New York University, USA. Following this alert the Editors immediately contacted the owners of Regional Studies - the Regional Studies Association and their publishers, Taylor & Francis Group (a division of Informa Plc). Legal advice was sought from a lawyer expert in publishing law and based on careful consideration of this advice and of guidelines laid out by COPE, the Committee of Publishing Ethics of whom both the publisher and the journal are members, it was agreed that the correct course of action would be the retraction of this article.
