The P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft is averaging more than double its original service life of 7,500 hours.rn1. Wing fatigue led to a significant grounding in December 2007, when 39 P-3Cs were sent to depots for repairs.rn2. More aircraft have since trickled into the depot for similar work.rn3. Re-winging efforts involve replacing some of the lower-wing planks in some cases, and replacing the entire outer-wing assembly in others.rnThe P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft has been a Navy workhorse since the 1960s, conducting numerous intelligence missions over land and at sea. But as the aircraft racks up flight hours - and with the replacement Boeing P-8A Poseidon still three years away - the service faces many challenges to keep the aging aircraft flying.
