摘要

From its inception, the New School has been concerned with the relation between theory and practice, and the University in Exile amplified the role of "critical thinking" in the university's mission. After World War II, the university acquired a music conservatory and a design school, as well as starting an undergraduate college, a management school, and drama and jazz programs - all of which sat uneasily at times under the mantra of practice-based critical thinking but were nevertheless committed to a progressive ethos.
