摘要

Geneticist Sheldon Reed proclaimed in Counseling in Medical Genetics (1955) that, "The desire for a happy family of normal children is one of the strongest human motivations" and "the highest of life's goals." Reed, who coined the term "genetic counseling" in 1947, believed that counseling in heredity was the key to helping people achieve their ideal families. Counseling could present probabilities on one's chances of inheriting Huntington's disease, and provide risks of recurrence for the parents of an albino baby or a child with spina bifida. Genetic counseling of the 1940s and 50s was based on clinical observation and mathematical risk calculations gleaned from family histories, and was usually conducted by MDs or PhD geneticists at the periphery of their research or clinical practice.
