After the tragic accident of Apollo 1 that claimed the lives of astronauts Roger Chaffee, Gus Grissom, and Edward White in 1967, specific flammability requirements were written for the selection of textiles based on the spacecraft atmosphere. Fabrics should not support combustion in the 70/30 oxygenitrogen environment at 43.4 kPa of the Apollo capsule. These requirements applied to the entire Apollo program.
