Any marathoner will tell you that running a marathon gives a great sense of accomplishment, as 26.2 miles is quite a long distance to master. At the end of most marathons, finishers receive medals to commemorate their participation in the race (Figure 6 shows medals from several marathons in the U.S.). These are cherished items for many racers, and they serve the purpose of reminding the runner of his or her marathon experience.
