Manufactured by the Hacker Boat Co., the Hacker-Craft A-2 and A-3 were militarized radio-controlled boats developed in the late 1930s for use as coast-defense surface targets by the U.S. Army and waterborne explosive carriers by the Navy. In May 1944, the project transitioned to the Office of Strategic Services to support a joint development with the Army Air Forces known as Project Campbell. Part of the reason for this handoff was a growing perception that such television-equipped surface torpedoes were too exposed and slow to be effective against ever improving defensive measures.
