During the afternoon of Friday, April 25, 1986, a crew of engineers and technicians initiated a simple test associated with the planned shutdown at an electric power generating nuclear reactor -Unit No. 4, Chernobyl Power Station, Pripyat, Ukraine, in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The process began with the routine reduction of thermal output from the reactor. Shortly after the procedure started, a single telephone call from the manager of the electricity distribution grid in Kiev asked for the shutdown of the generator to be delayed until the evening due to high industrial demand. From that moment, the unit crew began to deviate from the test plan. The chain of events led to the point of no return that occurred at 1:06:20 a.m. local time the following morning, and culminated 18 minutes later with the explosive rupture of the reactor vessel and the spontaneous release of superheated steam, along with more than six million curies of highly radioactive material into the atmosphere.
