In an effort to meet a deadline set forth in the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act (FDAAA) of 2007, the FDA and HHS are seeking comments from drugmakers, distributors, foreign regulators and other interested parties on ways to establish a standard numerical identifier for tracking drugs in the supply chain. FDAAA, which was signed into law Sept. 27, 2007, gives HHS until March 2010 to develop a system for numerical identifiers to be harmonized with international consensus standards. Once a system is in place, a numerical identifier will be applied to a prescription drug at the point of manufacturing or repackaging at either the package or pallet level.
