Mexico's President, Vicente Fox, accomplished a coup of sorts at the end of May when BAT Mexico (BATM) and Philip Morris Mexico (PMM) agreed to make substantial contributions to a health-related federal fund. A spokesman for BATM told World Tobacco that the two companies would begin contributing about Pe0.50 per 20-piece pack that they sell, beginning in August. The contribution would increase gradually until December 2006, he added, when it would peak at Pe I per pack. The range of prices for 20-piece packs ran from seven to 17 pesos in 2003.
