This month it has been announced that Philip Morris is about to launch Basic cigarettes onto the UK market. As its name implies, Basic is a straightforward product that will compete in the growing low-price segment against brands such as Richmond and Mayfair. All of this would seem part of the normal market activity except for a couple of issues. Firstly, Imperial Tobacco, which distributes PM's other major UK brand, Marlboro, is reportedly not very keen on distributing a brand that will compete head on with its own low-price brand, Richmond. And secondly, the UK is now what the industry refers to as a 'dark' market - one where advertising and promotion is not allowed. Given this situation, PM has apparently said that it might consider setting up its own sales and distribution system.
