SOYBEAN prices are high, and the threat of Asian soybean rust is always in the back of a grower's mind. Spraying every acre with a fungicide may seem like a good insurance policy under these circumstances, but there's no exact science that can predictwhether that practice will pay off. "We've typically seen about 25% of the soybean acres in southeast Missouri get treated with a fungicide at the R3 stage," says Allen Wrather, plant pathologist at the University of Missouri's Delta Research Center inPortageville. The R3 stage is the point at which the first 54-inch pods can be found at one of the four upper nodes on the plant.
