Angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers and aliskiren (a renin inhibitor) must be avoided throughout pregnancy, mainly due to a risk of malformations.Antihypertensive drugs are used during pregnancy in order to stabilise blood pressure and to prevent hypertensive exacerbations in women with pre-existing chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, or preeclampsia.The risk of adverse effects on the outcome of pregnancy or on the unborn child must be taken into account in the choice of treatment.
