Excellent qualitative inquiry reads seamlessly and elegantly-rather like an interesting novel. We study the everyday world, using everyday research tools of talking and watching. Yet those who are outstanding researchers push their analysis beyond the obvious, so that their studies surprise and delight. Everyone learns something reading a good qualitative study. But there is a "Catch-22"-because these studies hide the author's academic jargon, the results are understandable and comprehensible, and because the studies appear commonplace, everyday, or simplistic, people untrained in qualitative methods believe they can also do it. They believe that qualitative research is just a matter of "talking to the folks," summarizing what they say, and perhaps adding some actual quotations to "make it real."
