Purpose: To develop an evaluation framework for assessing the role of the head of department to which extensive changes made. Summary: It is discussed that the head of department position has been an integral part in the organizational structure of colleges and universities. Particularly, when a college turns into a university, extensive changes are often made to the role of the head of the department. In this article, it is attempted to develop an evaluation framework for assessing extensive changes that are made to the head of department role at Mount Royal University in Canada. Key metrics of the evaluation framework include academic leadership, job satisfaction, relational and leadership continuity. These are, in fact, termed as the 'head of department success factors'. In this paper the data collected by different means such as on-line surveys and interviews are used. (22 refs.)
