TO THE EDITOR: In reviewing the article by Worley et al. on core competencies for Psychosomatic Medicine (PM) clinical fellowships, there appeared to be a glaring omission; there was no mention of competencies in assessing and improving the quality of care. This oversight is especially remarkable in the face of multiple reports from the Institute of Medicine and other groups documenting high rates of medical errors, poor quality U.S. healthcare overall, the availability of proven methods to improve quality, and the need to prepare the health care work force to develop competencies in this area. These include reports directly addressing the mental health field. Moreover, the debates on health care reform have further raised the issue of health care quality and improvement to broad public attention.
