With vehicle manufacturers striving to outperform each other on refinement of their latest models, one of the most significant growth areas for anechoic test facilities in recent years has been the aero-acoustic wind tunnel (AAWT). There are about a dozen AAWTs scattered around the world. The majority are in Europe, a couple are in Japan, one is in Korea, and the rest are in the US. Dr Ed Duell, an aero-acoustic engineer and manager of the advanced technology segment at America's Jacobs Sverdrup company, has been involved in the provision of two of the latest and most sophisticated AAWTs. "There are three sources of noise: tire/road noise, engine noise, and wind noise," he says.
